And My Spirit Said Yes!  The African-American Experience:  Visions of the Past and Present,”  features over thirty men and women who have made significant contributions to the history of the North Tulsa, Tulsa and Oklahoma communities.

Praise from Barbara Seals Nevergold, Co-founder of Uncrowned Queens Institute, Buffalo, New York says “For too long Historians have ignored the importance of documenting the histories of the everyday man and woman who have contributed to the historic records of their communities.  Andy My Spirit Said, Yes! is a compilation of the biographical sketches and photos of  African American Oklahoma Community Leaders.  Mr. Thompson has made a significant contribution by collecting; preserving and creating an accessible file of regional African American history that otherwise might be lost.”

Don Thompson’s photography has been selected to appear in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. which will open in 2016.  Don is the author of Hush Somebody’s Callin’ My Name, member of Tulsa Artist Coalition, Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, Philbrook Museum and other community organizations.  Books will be available for purchase at the event for $20.00 and applicable tax.

Books can also be purchased from Natural Health on Greenwood, Inc., 112 North Greenwood Ave., Full Circle Bookstore, 50 Penn Place, 1900 NW Expressway, Oklahoma City and

Because of Them, We Can Fashion Show

A Snapshot of Black History

Umoja Soul Writers Group and the Boys & Girls Club would like to present the 2015 “Because of Them, We Can Fashion Show,” A Snapshot of Black History.
The Because of Them, We Can campaign was created by Eunice Jones out of her desire to share Black history and promising future through images that would refute stereotypes and build the esteem of Black children.
We would like your child to participate as a Fashion Model of Black History. A list of people your child can choose to model are listed below. Once your child picks a person, please go to the   website and find pictures of that person and see what clothing & accessories are needed.  If a name is not on the Because of them we can website, please review books, or google online for an image to copy.
We will have rehearsal on Wednesday, February 11 at 3:30 -5pm and Monday February 16 and 23, at 3:30-5pm.
The Because of them, we can Fashion Show will take place on Saturday February 28 from 2pm-4pm. Refreshments and snacks will be served and entertainment will be provided.
50 children ages 5-16 are needed.  This Fashion Show is diverse and we encourage diversity in races, culture and ethnicity to participate.  The volunteer will read a small bio history of the person as the child models. The child will say a small quote or one sentence about their person as well.

For example, Muhammad Ali character may be Caleb Jones. Caleb would walk on stage and as he is introduced with his real name by the MC. Young Muhammad goes to mic and says, "I am Muhammad Ali. I dance like a butterfly and sting like a bee." Then the MC reads a short bio and then points back to stage and says, "Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, this is Caleb Jones as Muhammad Ali. Then Caleb says, Because of Muhammad Ali, I can!"
This is a great community involvement for Black History Month in which all kids are invited to participate.

People in Black History

Items in BLUE have been selected. If there is a name that is not on the list, you can choose a Black History Character for them. All participants would need to email a picture of their character so we can display on the projector as they model. We are excited and glad that the kids are excited as well.
